Sacrifice For Love

Chapter One

John noticed the seal as soon as it popped its silken head out from the sea. But he merely grinned to himself and kept on with his work, pulling in the nets and lobster cages onto the boat for the day before gathering his lunch box. The day had been a lovely one, and the sun had shone down, hot and strong. In a land usually cast in mist and gray, it was a rare treat to see the daystar for so long. A treat which had John in a fantastic mood despite a day with no catches and a bank account that was gradually dwindling.

But he knew his luck would pick up soon; it always did. It took a great deal to keep John Callahan down for long.

“Come on, boy,” he said as he patted his thigh and called his sheepdog, Rufus, to him. The shaggy dog bumbled over to him and jumped up, his tail wagging with joy. John petted him, ruffling his calico fur. Then both set off for home, walking the dusty pathway along the coastline that meandered around the rocks.

The seal followed along, he noted, as closely as was possible for it to. Its curious little head was popping out of the current every so often to check on John’s whereabouts. But he kept his eyes mostly forward, whistling a tune until suddenly the seal disappeared altogether. John’s heart faltered. Quickly, he rushed down the slope of the dune and onto the beach, not caring if sand was working its way into his boots. He stared into the waves as the sun continued to set.

Nothing.

“Are you ignoring me, John?” a woman asked just after John had heaved a sigh. He spun around and there she sat. Cellinel.

John smiled at her and the seaweed clinging to her long brown hair as she sat perched on the rock, her pelt partially peeled down her body leaving the lower half to stay in seal form. “Now, why would I do that?” he teased. Still holding his lunch box, he walked closer to Cellinel and placed it on the stone beside her.

“I do not know why humans do most things, John.” She took his lunch box and studied it despite having seen the metal box hundreds of times before. The world of humans had never failed to fascinate her, and she, this faerie creature, had held John enraptured since their meeting two years prior.

His gaze trailed over her lean body. Her eyes were big and the color of the ocean, with an unknowable depth. Her skin was pale against the dark gray of the stone. Her long chestnut locks covered her supple breasts. What he wouldn’t give to taste those peaks and make her come undone in his arms… “Are you ever going to stay on land with me, Cellinel?”

John’s body may have been thinking about her in a more carnal fashion, but his heart had loved Cellinel for the last year and a half.
